In September 2024, we spent the last 2 weeks of September in the Champagne Ardennes. Right in the harvest time of the champagne grapes. In this region, it is not the vintner, but a committee that decides when to harvest. This is to maximise the yield, because only the much-loved bubbles made in this area are allowed to call themselves champagne.
I took this photo in the town of Hautvillers, where Dom Perignon, among others, has its headquarters.
Hautvillers is also called the "birthplace of champagne".
It is a sweet little town, built against a hill, from where you have a beautiful view over the vineyards.
What struck me were the wrought-iron signs. So beautifully made.
This photo was taken against a clear blue sky as a background, which makes the details stand out beautifully.
It was incredibly fun to be here during the harvest.
I got to photograph the enthusiastic grape pickers and they were happy to tell me which grape they were picking and which champagne house it was for. At lightning speed, the grapes were cut and placed in large crates. They are then taken to the pressing plant (pressoir). And then the process can begin that gives you the festive wine we so love to usher in the new year or celebrate anything.
Santé!
