About "Sant Andrea della Valle"

About the artwork

Sant'Andrea della Valle was modelled on the church of Il Gesù, the mother church of the Jesuits, and was begun in the early Baroque period and completed in the late Baroque period. The construction was financed by a donation from a member of the Piccolomini family, among others.[2] Cardinal Alfonso Gesualdo made the first financial commitment in 1588.[3] Giacomo della Porta and Francesco Grimaldi began construction between 1586 and 1591. Work on the foundations and the construction of the first two bays of the nave with the associated side chapels was completed by 1599. Due to financial problems of the order and the death of the cardinal, work was interrupted from 1599 to 1608[3]. From this year onwards, the funds for the further work were donated by Alessandro Peretti, whose master builder at the time, Carlo Maderno, continued until the completion of the building as such in 1622; he probably modified della Porta's original plans. The façade was only completed by Carlo Rainaldi from 1656[2] or 1662[3] to 1665/66 according to Maderno's modified plans.
