A "must-see" for every San Francisco visitor is Pier 39 with its souvenir shops, boutiques, restaurants and cabaret performances ... and of course the sea lions on the western side.
Right next to Pier 39 is Forbes Island, located at the end of the long walkway between Pier 39 and Pier 41. What initially looks like a small lighthouse on a tiny island is actually a very special kind of restaurant. Not only is the interior below the surface of the water, it is also the only man-made floating island in existence. In 1975, New York-born Forbes Thor Kiddoo, inspired by the novel "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", began building the 700-tonne seaworthy vessel, which has been moored here since 1999.
