Salzburg is an Austrian city located on the border with Germany at the foot of the Eastern Alps. The Salzach River flows through the center of the city. On the left bank is the Old Town, designated as a pedestrian zone, with buildings from the Middle Ages and Baroque. On the opposite side of the river stretches the New Town from the 19th century. In the house where Mozart was born in the Old Town there is now a museum displaying original instruments from the famous composer's childhood.
Salzburg Cathedral is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Salzburg and thus the metropolitan church of the ecclesiastical province of Salzburg; it is dedicated to St. Rupert and St. Virgil. The Baroque building, completed during the Thirty Years' War, is a protected monument and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Center of the City of Salzburg.
The Hohensalzburg Fortress is a real eye-catcher high above the baroque towers of the city. As a landmark visible from afar, the fortress is an unmistakable part of Salzburg's world-famous silhouette. It appears mighty to visitors from afar, and history can be experienced up close behind its thick walls.
