The Mönchsberg rises in the middle of Salzburg's old town. With its meadows, woods and wonderful vantage points, it is particularly popular as a local recreation area.
The Mönchsberg is named after the monks of the nearby Benedictine monastery of St. Peter. It extends over a length of 500 m from the Fortress Hill in a northerly direction along the left bank of the Salzach River to Mülln. Its highest point measures 508 m.
Small castles, villas, old fortifications, meadows, forests and magnificent views of the city and the Alpine panorama make the Plateauberg a varied local recreation area. In addition to easy walking trails, the Mönchsberg also offers varied routes for city hikers.
The city parish church of Our Lady of the Assumption, also known as the Augustinian Church or Müllner Church, is located in the city of Salzburg in the Mülln district at the northern foot of the Mönchsberg. It is one of the listed buildings in the city of Salzburg.
