Salzburg Cathedral is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Salzburg and thus metropolitan church of the ecclesiastical province of Salzburg; it is dedicated to St. Rupert and St. Virgil, The Baroque building, completed during the Thirty Years' War, is a protected monument and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Center of the City of Salzburg.
The Marian Column is located in the center of the Cathedral Square in Salzburg's Old Town. It is one of the listed objects in the city.
The column was built in the style of the statues of the Virgin Mary in Vienna and Munich. The wife of the sculptor Johann Baptist Hagenauer, Rosa, was the model for the statue of the Virgin Mary. The base, pedestal and balustrade of the Marian column are made of Untersberg marble. The larger-than-life figures are made of lead. At the top is the statue of Mariae Immaculata, the Immaculate Mary, enthroned on a mountain of clouds and a globe. The four reliefs of the pedestal each surrounded by an allegorical figure (angel, devil, truth and church).
