The Franziskanerbogen is located in the old town, in Franziskanergasse, a short street on the edge of the St Peter district. Franziskanergasse is one of the oldest and most central alleyways in the Old Town. In its centre runs the old border between the monastic city and the princely city.
The Franciscan Arch rises above Franziskanergasse and connects the Franciscan monastery in the south with the Franciscan Church of Our Lady in the north. Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who donated the monastery to the Franciscans already present in Salzburg, had the connecting passageway built above an arch.
