About ‘Salt and Silence in El Cotillo’ by Rene van Heerdt

The door stands silently, green against a wall that seems to have seen better days. In El Cotillo, on the edge of Fuerteventura, nothing is truly protected from the sea. Salt creeps in everywhere. Into the pores of the plaster, along the edges of the wood, into every crack that started small and slowly grew larger. What is called ageing here does not feel like decay but rather a form of cooperation between man and nature.

The green paint does not simply flake off. It peels away in a way that seems almost deliberate, as if the wind and salt know exactly where to stop. The wall is cracked, rough and uneven, but that is precisely what gives it character. Every trace tells a story about time. About the sun that spares nothing, about nights when the sea breathes audibly, just out of sight. This door has nothing to hide or protect. It is no longer an entrance, but a memory. A frozen moment in a village that is in no hurry. Where perfection is not a goal and wear and tear is not a mistake. Here, something can be old, even damaged, as long as it is real.

What I love is that this is not a set. This is not an attempt to look vintage. It has been purely functional and has simply remained so. The sea has left its mark, not aggressively, but patiently. And that is precisely where the beauty lies. In the slow emergence of something you cannot design, only find.
