Sculptures by Josep Maria Subirachs on the Passion facade of the Sagrada Familia Basilica by Gaudí, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.
I found the sculptures on this facade, and the style in which they are carved, both intriguing and fascinating. The sharp geometric shapes of the sculptures create hard shadows and the lack of ornaments (in stark contrast to the nativity facade) allows the viewer to concentrate more on the shapes and textures.
This facade was projected by Antoni Gaudi in 1911, with the definitive sketch finished in 1917 which was the guide for the next generations.
The sculptural decoration of the Passion facade was commissioned in 1986 to Josep Maria Subirachs, who worked on bringing this side of the temple to life between 1987 and 2009.
