These stone steps, worn by time and the footsteps of pilgrims, lead to the top of Borobudur temple, the spiritual and architectural jewel of Yogyakarta, on the island of Java. Each level of this Buddhist monument, erected in the IXᵉ century, symbolises a step towards spiritual awakening.
To climb these stairs is to embark on an inner journey, from the world of desire to that of supreme wisdom, illustrated by the temple's terraced structure. The dark stones, carved from volcanic lava, bear witness to the exceptional skill of the builders of the Sailendra dynasty.
Under the blue Java sky, the light caresses the texture of the ancient blocks, revealing sculpted bas-reliefs and symbolic motifs imbued with meditation. The arched opening at the top evokes the passage between the material and spiritual worlds.
This shot captures the mystical dimension of Borobudur: a place where every step seems to bring you closer to silence, contemplation and universal harmony.
Passionate about photography, I travel the world in search of the most beautiful shots.
