Rusty vintage car in the French village of Oradour sur Glane. The body still shows the beautiful flowing lines after 75 years of stagnation even though holes are falling, moreover, the once smooth panels are lumpy from the rust. The tires and windows have disappeared over the years as has most of the upholstery.
The photo is done in typical Urbex style, which emphasizes the finer structures in combination with a compact contrast. This creates an extra atmospheric image.
The village of Oradour sur Glane was destroyed in the Oradour-sur-Glane Massacre on June 10, 1944: a German armored division raided the village, herded the men into granaries and executed them, herded the women and children into the church where there was a box of explosives, and when they went outside and tried to escape, the survivors were shot dead, and then the rest of the village as well. 642 people are thus murdered in three hours.
The village has since been preserved as a memorial unchanged as it was left.
This photograph is fraught with this context, even for me as a photographer. Because too few people know this place and its history, I think it is important to share the images and the story. In doing so, I do try to convey it aesthetically pleasing and respectful.
