Royal Theater Carré is an iconic building on the Amstel river and a recognizable part of the Amsterdam cityscape. Its location on the Amstel, its classic facade and rich history make it a recognizable and beloved part of the cityscape. As a photographer, such a location speaks for itself: visually strong, well balanced and always interesting to capture.
On this evening it was overcast, which made for a calm, even light. The warm lighting of the building contrasted nicely with the cool air and still water. No crowds, no distractions, all attention goes to the buildings on the quay.
I deliberately chose a tight composition in which Carré takes center stage, flanked by the surrounding buildings. The bare trees and calm water enhance the balance of the image.
At home, I elaborated on the photo with attention to colour and detail, so as to preserve the atmosphere of the moment. The result is a cityscape that is personal to me, but also recognizable to anyone who has a thing for Amsterdam.
