Waterstad, or Water City, is the name of the part Rotterdam between the former sea-dike and the river Nieuwe Maas. In the early 17th century this was the site of the first major city expansion. At that time Leuvehaven (left in the picture) and Scheepmakershaven (right) were dug.
Since port operations have been moved westward the old harbours of Waterstad are used mainly as an outdoor museum of historical ships, including the floating crane and the three-master Oosterschelde which we see here. Wijnhaveneiland, right, is primarily a residential area. In the background we see some office and residential towers in downtown Rotterdam.
