The Roman Forum in Rome was once the political, religious and social centre of ancient Rome.
Excavations of the old centre of the Roman Empire at the foot of the Capitoline Hill only began at the end of the 19th century. In the age of Emperor Augustus (27 BC-14 AD), ancient Rome already had over 1 million inhabitants and the Roman Forum was the political, legal and religious centre of the Roman Empire.
