The 'Fontana di Trevi', or Trevi Fountain, is perhaps the most famous fountain in the world, but certainly the most famous in Rome. The baroque fountain in the Piazza di Trevi was initially designed by Bernini on behalf of Pope Clement XII and was only built and redesigned (at a lower cost) 50 years later by the architect Nicola Salvi. Construction lasted from 1732 to 1762 and the fountain owes its fame to the many films in which it appears.
The almost 30 metre high Trevi Fountain was built at the back of the Palazzo Poli building. The statue of the sea god Neptune, who is being pulled towards the sea on his shell-shaped chariot by two winged horses and Tritons (young sea gods), stands in the centre under the triumphal arch.
