I took this photo in the Camposanto. The Camposanto is one of the parts of the Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa.
Pisa is a city in Italy near the mouth of the Arno River in the Tuscany region. It is also the capital of the province of Pisa. The city has about 89,000 inhabitants, called Pisano (singular) and Pisani (plural). The city is most famous for its "leaning tower", and the 'Camposanto monumentale' (literally: monumental holy field) is located at the northern corner of the Piazza. It is a walled cemetery (campo santo), and many consider it the most beautiful cemetery in the world. It is said to have been built around a shipload of sacred soil from Golgotha, brought to Pisa after the Second Crusade by Archbishop Ubaldo de' Lanfranchi in the 12th century. The Camposanto once contained a large collection of Roman statues and sarcophagi, 84 of which remain today. The walls were covered with frescoes, most of which were destroyed by firebombs on 27 July 1944.
Since 1945, restorers have been busy restoring them. Over the years, the Camposanto has been restored to its original state as much as possible.
