The Roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus), also called horse antelope or bastard chamois buck, is an African antelope species from the subfamily of horse antelopes (Hippotraginae). His closest living relative is the sable antelope or black horse antelope (Hippotragus niger).
It is a large, strong antelope with a firm neck and shoulders. The rough coat is rougher on the throat. The coat colour is more yellow-brown in the north of its range, more grey in the south, and more dark red in wetter areas. The belly is white. The face has a black and white drawing. This drawing differs per individual and region: animals from the south have more white in the drawing, animals from the north more black. The legs are reddish, with irregular dark spots on the forelegs. They end up in big hooves. Over the neck to the shoulders runs a clear upright moon, consisting of hairs with distinct black dots. The muzzle is large and the ears are long and narrow with tufts of long hair on top. The sickle-shaped horns of the male are ringed and curved backwards. These are 50 to 100 centimeters long. The horns of a female are shorter and less bent than those of an adult male.
