River landscape with horsemen, Aelbert Cuyp, 1653 - 1657 A wide sunlit river landscape, blurred in the distance, with an airy outline of clouds. Two Dutch officers stop by the river and water their horses close to a shepherd with his resting flock. This idyllic scene is not set in Italy but on the Rhine between Nijmegen and Kleve, where Cuyp made landscape drawings that he took to his studio in Dordrecht. Rijksmuseum Rights: CC0
