The Var rises in Estenc, a hamlet of Entraunes at an altitude of 1790 metres, at the Cayolle Pass. After 114 kilometres, it flows into the Mediterranean between Nice and Saint-Laurent-du-Var. Before the county of Nizza was annexed in 1860, the Var formed the eastern border of France. With that annexation, a new department of the Alpes-Maritimes was created, to which part of the existing Var department was also added. As a result, the Var no longer flows into the remaining Var department, but entirely into the Alpes-Maritimes, except for a small section in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence near Entrevaux.
