Pebbles or shingles are rounded, smooth clasts (cobbles, stones or gravel, depending on grain size). They are formed by abrasion and rubbing against each other under the influence of water or wind. Hence, they are also referred to as rolling stones. Their presence on Mars suggests that water once flowed there: some were too heavy to have been carried away by the wind.
Pebbles get their shape by being carried along in a river or under the action of sea waves and tides. Particularly spherical specimens are formed in so-called giant or devil's cauldrons. They are often used as such in works of art or as building materials.
At the bay of Marmaris in Loggos on the Greek island of Paxos, I have often marveled at the turquoise beauty of the Ionian Sea. The morning sunlight scatters the seawater colors across the chalky white pebbles. Not quite an ocean but still.... A beautiful timeless work that I painted with watercolor and finished here and there with copper foil tones.
Enjoy this Work on Your Wall. Greetings,
Rikki
