Balance between subject and sky. What you see here is a clay landscape. Parched, no water for weeks and the ground opens up. The stones presumably millions of years old once swept along by the Rhone. In the foreground, they give variety and a nice depth effect. The sky, clear and with clouds floating over, again no water for the clay soil that actually cries out for it.
