Rembrandt van Rijn, Suzanna, 1636 Suzanna is just about to take a bath when two old men emerge from the bushes. She looks up startled - the men on the right behind her can barely be seen in the dark. The two try to force Suzanna to have sex, threatening to spread slander. Rembrandt depicted Suzanna in full light, making her appear even more vulnerable in all her nakedness. He did not paint an idealised woman, but one of flesh and blood. The imprint of her removed stockings is still in her calves.
