About the artwork

Realistic painting in acrylic of Rembrandt van Rijn, working on a self-portrait, painted by the artist Paul Meijering - the original painting is 90 x 120 cm and available for sale.

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) was born a miller's son in Leiden. After the Latin school, his parents enrolled him at the university in 1620. Rembrandt soon dropped out. He became a painter's apprentice with Jacob van Swanenburch in Leiden and then with Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam. Back in Leiden he established himself, with Jan Lievens, as an independent painter. During this time Rembrandt painted many Bible scenes in a precise style with variegated colors.

In 1631 he moved to Amsterdam, where he received many portrait commissions. Among his many pupils were Ferdinand Bol, Govert Flinck and Carel Fabritius. In Rembrandt's own work, the contrast of light and dark became stronger, the brushwork looser, the compositions more dramatic. In addition to portraits, he painted many history pieces and made etchings and drawings.

Rembrandt married Saskia Uylenburgh in 1634. In 1641 their son Titus was born, a year later Saskia died. With Hendrickje Stoffels, Rembrandt had a daughter in 1654. By then he had high debts and had to sell house and property. He died in 1669 and was buried in Amsterdam's Westerkerk.
