A windless sunrise at the UNESCO World Heritage site Kinderdijk. Some of the 19 windmills are reflected in the still water while a large cloud, already lit by the barely risen sun, provides a nice balance to the composition.
The first windmills were built here as early as the end of the 15th century for the purpose of keeping the surrounding polders dry. Today's windmills are almost all younger, mostly built around 1740. Over time, with further industrialisation, the function of the mills was taken over by steam and later diesel pumping stations.
