The tower of the Big or Saint Lawrence Church, Rotterdam's oldest landmark, reflects in the water of Delftsevaart canal in this sunny image.
Saint Lawrence Church is the only remaining medieval building in the center of Rotterdam. The tower dates from the fifteenth century, although the structure was raised several times in the centuries that followed to its current 65 meters.
The church was severely damaged in the bombing raid on 14 May 1940, but fortunately the monument was restored after the war; a major achievement that was not completed until 1968.
To the left of the tower we see a building of much later date, but nevertheless older than most of the buildings in downtown Rotterdam: the district heating plant, put into operation in 1925.
