About "Red tulip in a field in the Netherlands"

About the artwork

Tulips are native to the area that became known as Kazakhstan, then part of the Ottoman Empire. The genus' range extends from the Iberian Peninsula through North Africa to northwest China.

Tulips need a cold night and a cold winter to grow, so they cannot be grown in warm climates. New bulbs are grown by planting tulip bulbs in autumn. The flowering period runs from April to June.

Tulips have a rich cultural history. They were originally grown in the Ottoman Empire and became popular in Europe, especially in the Netherlands, in the 17th century. In the 17th century, 'tulip mania' spread through the Dutch Republic, leading to a speculative frenzy in which tulip bulbs became extremely valuable commodities.

Tulips are associated with different meanings depending on their colour. Generally, they symbolise perfect love, imagination and dreaminess. Red tulips are often associated with true love, while yellow tulips can symbolise happy thoughts and sunshine.

Tulips can be propagated by bulbs. After flowering, the foliage should die naturally so that the bulb can store energy for the next growing season. Bulbs can then be dug up, divided and replanted in autumn.

Tulips remain one of the most beloved and recognisable spring flowers, cherished for their vibrant colours and elegant shapes. Their beauty continues to captivate gardeners and flower lovers around the world.
