This photo is part three of a triptych in which this European red fox hunted a hapless mouse that had no chance. The photos're taken in nature reserve the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes which is famous for its foxes. The animals are easy to spot there for hikers and keen nature photographers like me. They do not bother people at all and if you do not get too close you can observe and photograph them well.
The European red fox is very adaptable and can survive in a variety of environments, from forests to urban areas. They communicate with a wide range of sounds and body language and can jump high and far to surprise their prey. Foxes usually hunt 'at night and often bury excess food for later use. Although they are solitary, they sometimes live in family groups while raising young. They are playful, which helps them practise hunting techniques, and their coat colour can range from reddish-brown to silver-grey or black. Foxes are known for their cunning and use scent markings to mark their territory and communicate with other foxes.
