The red deer (Cervus elaphus), with a shoulder height of 110 cm on average, is the largest land-dwelling mammal in the Netherlands, and the second largest species in the deer family in Europe after the moose. The fur of red deer is reddish-brown in summer, which is why they are also called 'red deer'. In winter, the coat colour is greyish brown.
