In a canoe you are alone, with only the water for company. I love canoeing and have done it many times, on my own and with others. In this painting I try to represent that feeling of freedom. The canoeist sails away from the image, leaves everything behind and sails towards freedom, a new (life) route. I made the painting with acrylic paint on cardboard. The blue is built up in several layers and the white waves are made with the 'scratch away'-technique. I made it in 1992 and the work is signed. The size of the original is 50 x 64 cm. With a good SLR camera I managed to make a picture of it that is suitable for all kinds of prints.
