Another in my ballet-of-light series beside the seaside here on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset!
My fifty-year journey across photography, film, print, theatre, music, and three-dimensional design wasn't a collection of purchases or quick courses. It was decades of earning my place in each discipline, understanding not just the techniques but the soul of each medium. When I handle light in my paintings, it's informed by years of wrestling with theatrical illumination, understanding how shadows can tell stories, how colour temperature affects emotion.
You cannot buy the knowledge of how colours behave differently across print production versus canvas. You cannot purchase the understanding of how a photographer's eye influences composition, or how a theatre director's instincts shape dramatic tension. These insights are earned through years of practice, failure, success, and the gradual accumulation of creative wisdom.
In our digital age, where AI can generate images in seconds, the earned signature of human experience becomes even more precious. My paintings contain the sediment of multiple artistic lifetimes - the precise eye of a photographer, the dramatic instincts of a theatre director, the technical mastery of a print specialist. This convergence of earned expertise creates something that cannot be replicated or replaced, only authentically lived.
And live it and love it I do. So, I hope you enjoy this interpretation as much as I do.
