Echinacea purpurea, also known as red sunshade, is a perennial plant in the composite family (Asteraceae). The species is native to North America and is widely used in ornamental gardens and herbal medicine.
The plant has sturdy, erect stems that can grow up to 1.5 metres tall, with rough, dark green leaves. The flowers bloom from July to September and consist of a distinctive orange-brown cone-shaped centre surrounded by pendulous, purple-pink ribbon flowers.
Known for its appeal to bees, butterflies and other pollinators, Echinacea purpurea is often used in natural borders and prairie plantings. In addition, the plant is traditionally used to support the immune system.
