Two pilots prepare for a night mission with their F-4 Phantom II. The British Air Force's impressive McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II at night. The McDonnell F-4 Phantom II is an American-made fighter jet manufactured by McDonnell Aircraft. The aircraft was one of the best jet fighters during the Cold War era and was called Mig Killer by pilots, among others. The F-4 Phantom earned that nickname because during the Vietnam War it shot down not only many old MiG-17s, but also the MiG-21s, which were new for the time. The first flight of an F-4 Phantom was carried out on 27 May 1958 and the Phantom could be used from 30 December 1960. The aircraft was withdrawn from service by most countries since the early 1990s.
