About "Rare Classic Bugatti 57 SC Atlantic From 1938"

About the artwork

This rare classic Bugatti 57 SC Atlantic was built in 1938. Jean Bugatti wanted to build a high-speed grand touring car that was capable of flying through the air. The resulting T57SC Atlantic coupe was intended to use an Elektron alloy, but the metal proved difficult to work with, and the body was eventually made of aluminum. The riveted flange construction method had a negative impact, causing spines along the body's centerline.

A second Type 57SC Atlantic was built for Jean Bugatti, who bought it for $12.2 million a year later. It had a V-shaped radiator and mesh grilles on either side of the engine compartment. While it was the first automobile of its kind, the 57SC was the first car to use this design. It's a unique classic Bugatti that still evokes nostalgia for the 1930s.

In 2008, Ralph Lauren purchased the 57SC Atlantic, commissioned a full restoration with Paul Russell and Co, and it has never looked better. The team cut through the previous work and returned the car to its original glory. It was also painted black by request, and its owner, Bob Oliver, took the car to Pebble Beach in 1990 and Villa d'Este in 2013. The resulting vehicle won Best of Show awards at both venues.
