The red kite, () is a bird of prey in the hawk family (Accipitridae).
Fine bird of prey, slightly larger than a Buzzard, with a forked tail in all plumage (more conspicuous in adult birds than in juveniles). Reddish mantle and wings, with a conspicuous white patch on the underside of the hand wing in all plumage and deep-set black hand-tip. A passage migrant in the Netherlands, which can be observed in all months of the year, but mainly in April/May and to a slightly lesser extent in autumn. Breeds only exceptionally in the Netherlands and is a relatively scarce breeding bird in Europe.
