In 1975 it was the first time I visited Buttermere Lake in Cumbria's Lake District. As a young boy of 10, I was deeply impressed by nature. Buttermere is a peaceful lake but also riven with many mosquitoes and gnats along the moderately sized lake shores.
Buttermere is on the B5289 road that runs past Crummock Water and along the Cocker River valley north to Cockermouth. In the other direction, the B5289 runs through the steep Honister Pass to Borrowdale and Keswick. A more direct but smaller road crosses nearby Newlands Pass to the Newlands Valley and from there to Keswick.
