About the artwork

RAILWAY BRIDGE OF DEVENTER AND THE ICECREAM IN YELLOW AND GREEN.

Photo taken at the Deventer railway bridge with long shutter speed.

In 1865 Deventer was connected to the railway network, when the connection with Zutphen was completed. The following year the line was extended to Zwolle. The route Zwolle-Zutphen was part of the railway line Arnhem - Leeuwarden.

A connection to the west only came in 1887, when the line to Apeldoorn was opened. The railway bridge over the river IJssel was the first part of the line to be built. The railway line Apeldoorn - Deventer was originally intended as a local railway and was constructed by the Koninglijke Nederlandsche Locaalspoorweg-Maatschappij. The connection with Almelo followed in 1888. The line Apeldoorn-Almelo was soon taken over by the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij, which also introduced express trains on the line in 1892. Apeldoorn had already since 1876 a connection with the west as a stop on the railway line Amsterdam - Zutphen. In 1917 Amersfoort - Apeldoorn - Deventer - Almelo became the main route from the west to Twente. Apeldoorn-Zutphen became a sideline.
