The swallowtail (Papilio machaon) is a butterfly in the family of pages (Papilionidae). The swallowtail has a relatively large wingspan of up to 75 mm for a page, and is one of the largest butterflies found in Belgium and the Netherlands. Its wings are predominantly yellow in colour, plus a distinctive black and yellow pattern with blue highlights, a red patch on the hind wing and an elongated, black-coloured wing appendage called the wingtail or wing slip.
