However, the name "putter" has another origin. In the past, this bird was often kept in cages in which it had to pull up (putter) a thimbleful of water by itself in order to drink. This behaviour gave the bird the name "putter".
So, both the putter's preference for thistles and its former behaviour in cages have contributed to the names given to this bird.
