The work was inspired by a photograph I took during my visit to the Middachten Estate. There, during a walk on the estate, I came across this beautiful scene of the Hydrangea plant.
The image gives me a wonderful rural feeling. But it doesn't just do that to me. It sparked my imagination and I began to see more in it than just beautiful flowers in bloom. I began to see something real in it.
The flowers that have sprouted seem to form a kind of wall around the buds that have not yet matured. A kind of protective line. It reminds me of how elders protect the young.
But I also see curiosity. I see buds wanting to get past that wall. They want to see the big world. Just like our young people are curious and want to.
All imagination of a madman, of course. But it is the little things I observe that give this work of art just a little more meaning for me than just seeing the beauty of the flowers themselves.
