About "Prince Claus Bridge Sunset"

About the artwork

The Prince Claus Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal within the city of Utrecht and was designed by Ben van Berkel, who became best known as the designer of the Rotterdam Erasmus Bridge. The original name for this bridge was Papendorpsebrug, but residents of the Kanaleneiland came up with the idea to name the bridge after Prince Claus. Princess Máxima opened the bridge named after her father-in-law on 25 June 2003.

This bridge forms the direct bank connection between the Utrecht neighbourhoods Kanaleneiland on the east side (where the architect of this bridge grew up) and Bedrijvengebied Papendorp on the west side of the canal. Moreover, this bridge is located in the shortest route between some parts of the city and the residences to the west of the city.

This bridge is of great importance for city and regional bus transport. Most of the buses between Utrecht and the area to the west, southwest and south of the city run over the Prince Claus Bridge, which is part of the Zuidradiaal in terms of bus transport. Two of the four lanes have therefore been set up as free bus lanes. This bridge is also equipped with an open cycle path on both sides.
