Powerplant is a dioecious, annual plant (therophyte) that blooms with greenish flowers. The stamen flowers (male) are arranged in panicles and the pistil flowers (female) are arranged in spikes in the leaf axils. The leaves are long-stemmed with five- to nine-lobed lanceolate leaflets and are coarsely serrated.
The plant grows one to four metres tall, depending on altitude and climate. Under certain conditions, the plant can become a hermaphrodite. Naturally occurring monoecious plants, with both male and female parts, are either sterile or fertile, but artificially induced "hermaphrodites" can have fully functional reproductive organs. "Feminised" seed sold by many commercial seed suppliers is derived from artificial "hermaphrodite" females that lack the male gene, or by treating the seeds with hormones or silver thiosulphate. Also known as Nederwiet.
