The power station was built in 1921 by the Charbonnage de Monceau Fontaine and ran on coal. During the interwar period, an expansion brought the capacity to 27 MW and around 1930 to 47 MW. The modern power station, fired with pulverized coal, was selected in the years 1938-40 for the experiments of engineer Albert De Smaele with the burning of lame (a moist residual product with quite a few inert shafts). If successful, this process would spread to Belgium.
