About ‘Portrait painting: Michiel de Ruyter as lieutenant admiral, Ferdinand Bol, 1667 ’
In 1667, Ferdinand Bol painted several life-size portraits of Michiel de Ruyter. Such a portrait was hung in all naval establishments; this one hung in Middelburg. His status as a naval hero made him powerful. De Ruyter is richly dressed, has his command staff in his hand and wears the Order of Saint Michel, which he received from the French king.
