A solitary African elephant (Loxodonta africana) stands majestically on the bank of a waterhole, with its ears spread wide and its trunk extended. The elephant's original surroundings have been replaced by an almost white background, making it look as if the elephant is standing on a misty plain. The warm, soft light accentuates the texture of its skin. I took the photo at sunset in Mapungubwe National Park in South Africa. A high-key black-and-white version of this work is also available.
