Portrait of Andries Bicker, Bartholomeus van der Helst, 1642 Andries Bicker, merchant on Russia and dealer in spices, was an administrative heavyweight. He was elected mayor of Amsterdam ten times, represented the city in the States General and was also ambassador to the Scandinavian countries, Poland and Brandenburg. When the famous Amsterdam portraitist Van der Helst portrayed him, the Bicker family was the most powerful family in Amsterdam.
