The Large poppy, Papaver rhoeas, is often seen in large numbers on roadsides or embankments along newly constructed roads in clayey regions. But if the soil is left alone it gradually disappears. The dark scarlet colour of the rather large flowers is striking even in the cereal fields where it originally made its home. It is known that after World War I, many battlefields in northern France were coloured red from all the poppies that germinated. The Poppy has therefore become the symbol for the veterans of that Great War.
