Beautiful poppies around the little church in den Hoorn on Texel. The poppies are processed for the blue poppy seed that again is on all kinds of bread and is processed by companies on Texel.
Poppy seed or blue poppy seed is the informal name for the seed of the sleep globe (Papaver somniferum). The somniferum is a box fruit. Varieties low in opiates are used to grow blue poppy seed. The bulb forms from the ovary of the flower after flowering, and when the seed is ripe it develops openings (pores) under a kind of cap. The cap is a remnant of the stigma disk.
If the stalk is moved vigorously by the wind, for example, the now dry seed is ejected from the bulb.
In the Netherlands and Belgium poppy seed is mainly used on bread and rolls. Prior to baking, the dough is pushed into a container with seeds or seeds are sprinkled on top. In Central Europe, poppy seeds are also used in larger quantities as a filling in bread and pastries or in dough paste. For this purpose, the seeds are first bruised.
Poppy seeds contain traces of the active substances in opiates but can be eaten quite safely. Tests looking at the use of opiates also respond to having eaten poppy seeds.
