About the artwork

Florence or Firenze is a city in Italy. It is the capital of the Tuscany region and the metropolitan city of Florence . The city has about 377,000 inhabitants and is situated on the river Arno. It is the cradle of the Renaissance and thus one of the most famous cultural cities of Europe.

Florence is the most outspoken Renaissance city in Italy. Nowhere else in Italy are there so many buildings and works of art from this period. The construction of the Duomo was started by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1296, continued by Giotto, after which Brunelleschi (1420-1436) placed the dome. She was consecrated by Pope Eugenius IV in 1436. Palazzo Vecchio was also designed by di Cambio and mainly built between 1298 and 1314. The palace was inhabited by the de Medici family until Cosimo I moved his seat to the Pitti Palace. The Carmine Church was begun (1268) in the Romano-Gothic style. After the fire in 1771 which destroyed a large part of the complex, the church - of which the Corsini Chapel and part of the Brancacci Chapel were preserved - was rebuilt on the basis of a Latin cross. The old St. Laurentius basilica dates back to the year 393 and was renovated in Romanesque style in the 11th century, and later rebuilt in Renaissance style by Brunelleschi, commissioned by the Medici.
