The Vatadage of Polonnaruwa is one of Sri Lanka's most emblematic Buddhist monuments, erected in the 12th century to house a relic of Buddha's tooth. This circular sanctuary, designed with remarkable precision, is surrounded by sculptures of lions and elephants, symbolising strength and spiritual protection. The site consists of two levels of steps and four Buddhas facing in the four cardinal directions, providing a serene atmosphere for visitors. The meticulously engraved stone ornaments depict scenes from the life of Buddha and reveal the influence of Hindu culture. Today, this sacred site attracts many pilgrims and tourists, testifying to the religious harmony and architectural wealth of ancient Sri Lanka.
