Pike men and drummers from the State Army during a historical re-enactment by Fotografiecor .nl

An impressive view from behind draws the viewer right into the ranks of the States Army, led by Prince Frederik Hendrik. A dense autumnal or battle-like array of metre-high wooden pikes reaches vertically towards the sky, carried by soldiers in authentic breastplates and gleaming morion helmets. Amidst the ranks, drummers in traditional attire beat large wooden drums to convey rhythmic marching orders. The unique angle lies in the perspective of the ‘first-person’ spectator standing directly behind the troops; the colourful feathers on the hats contrast sharply with the thick, white gunpowder smoke hanging in the background, shrouding the battlefield in a mysterious, picturesque mist. A vivid historical epic captured in a single powerful image.

This powerful image impressively captures the raw atmosphere, discipline and passion of living history. As it focuses on human interaction, cultural expressions and costumes, it fits seamlessly as a cross-sell with your ‘Fine Art & Abstract’ collection (due to the painterly lighting and misty gunpowder smoke). Position this work as a characterful, narrative statement piece that looks its best in classic studies, libraries, office environments with a love of heritage, or atmospheric hospitality venues.
